Some intrinsic electronic properties of home prepared (HP) TiO2 catalysts were investigated by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and quasi-Fermi level measurements. These powders were used for carrying out the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and CO2 in water; the selectivity for aldehyde formation was enhanced by the addition of small amounts of ethanol, a typical hole trap. The values of band gap, valence band and conduction band edges are almost identical for all the HP samples in which anatase phase is predominant, whereas appreciable differences can be noticed for an HP sample containing high amount of rutile phase. Active surfaces engineered by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors for selectively detecting sugar alcohols.

We introduce active surfaces generated by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors on a solid support for sensitive sugar alcohols detection. First, such selective nanoreactors were engineered in solution by simultaneous encapsulation of specific enzymes in copolymer polymersomes, and insertion of membrane proteins for selective conduct of sugar alcohols. The enthalpy and the volume of transfer (DeltaY(t)) of the unassociated (ethylene oxide)(13)-(propylene oxide)(30)-(ethylene oxide)(13) (L64) from water to the aqueous sodium alkanoate solutions as functions of the surfactant concentrations (m(S)) were determined at 298 K. The surfactants studied are sodium hexanoate, sodium heptanoate, sodium octanoate, sodium undecanoate, and sodium dodecanoate. As a general feature, for the short alkyl chain surfactants, DeltaY(t) describes an S-shaped curve in the range of m(S) analyzed whereas for the more hydrophobic surfactants the DeltaY(t) vs m(S) trends exhibit maxima which appear at ms values very close to the critical micellar concentration in w…

Benzylic alcohols are among the most important intermediates in organic synthesis. Recently, the use of abundant metals has attracted significant attention due to the issues with the scarcity of platinum group metals. Herein, we report a sequential method for the synthesis of benzylic alcohols by a merger of iron catalyzed cross-coupling and highly chemoselective reduction of benzamides promoted by sodium dispersion in the presence of alcoholic donors. Beta-adrenergic blocking activity and haemodynamic effects in man of K� 1313, a new beta-adrenergic antagonist

The beta-adrenergic blocking activity and haemodynamic effects of o-[2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)-propoxy]-benzonitril (Ko 1313) have been studied in 22 patients. Antagonism of isoproterenol-induced tachycardia was used as a measure of the beta-adrenergic blocking activity. Ko 1313 1.0 mg had its maximum beta-adrenoceptor blocking effect 5–30 min after intravenous injection. Ko 1313 10.0 mg produced maximum betablockade 1–4 h after oral administration. 1.0 mg Ko 1313 injected intravenously had approximately the same beta-adrenergic blocking effect as 1.0 mg propranolol also given intravenously. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatus, and altered bowel habits. The role of dietary components in inducing IBS symptoms is difficult to explore. To date, foods are not considered a cause but rather symptom-triggering factors. Covering: the literature from 1998 to 2004 The aim of the present review is to summarise the knowledge about newly isolated acetogenins (ACGs) in the last six years. It will also report the total syntheses that have allowed either the confirmation or the revision of some structures, together with the biological activities and mechanism of action of such interesting natural products. In fact, of the 417 isolated compounds reviewed, over 176 have been added during the period from 1998 to 2004.

On the determination of underivatised fatty alcohol ethoxylates by electrospray ionisation–mass spectrometry

Abstract The oligomers of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) exhibit large sensitivity differences in mass spectrometry with electrospray ionisation (ESI–MS) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). Standards of the oligomers from m = 1 to 7 ethylene oxide units (EOs) and linear alkyl chains from n = 10 to 18 carbon atoms were infused to examine the relative sensitivities or response factors in several media. The response factors of the [M + H]+ and [M + Na]+ peaks in 9:1 acetonitrile/water and methanol/water media containing acid buffers increased following irregular patterns when n and m increased.
